"This week SPC is publishing two photobooks together: Kim Do-gyun's 《Biotope Seoul》 and Hong Min-u's 《Sun Dust People》. Our series, which slowly binds one photographer's way of seeing into one city and one issue at a time, has reached its third book."
《Sun Dust People》 is the third book in the Street Photography Club (SPC) photobook series. It gathers the states of light, dust and people that Hong Min-u kept running into as he walked the streets.
The light came first
In strong light, surfaces burn away and only shapes remain. There was always dust in the air, and as he walked there was a strange smell of earth. You could not see it clearly, but the dust moved with the light. The light did not fall in straight lines. It spread out or drew in, and the scenes seemed to float rather than settle sharply in place.
States, not events
What the photographer saw were states, not events. In the scenes that open up in front of him, he does not chase events. He watches how people move within them. A street where people pass, stop and scatter again. The gaps that form between one person and another, and between people and space.
Looking at the pictures afterward, the state stays with you before the scene does. Things like the direction of the light or the density of the air. And along with them, how the people looked inside it.
Time, held in film
Images shot on film hold on to that state longer. Light bleeds, some detail disappears, and time stays in a state that has not fully set. Similar light and air, and movements that repeat, become the reference points. Between one scene and the next lies a gap that goes unexplained.
《Sun Dust People》 is a collection of states I kept running into. Light, dust, people. I kept watching the moments when those three overlapped.
The Street Photography Club photobook series
We are a culture platform for everyone who wants to record moments on the street. City or countryside, alley or square, wherever we stand becomes a frame. We observe the fleeting instant, record the true face of everyday life and share the way people see.
SPC is a small culture platform that brings together the eyes of street photographers. The series began with ISSUE.01, Kim Ji-hun's 《Busan: A Sea of Relief》, and this time it publishes two books at once: ISSUE.02, Kim Do-gyun's 《Biotope Seoul》 and ISSUE.03, Hong Min-u's 《Sun Dust People》.
